HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : It Only Takes Five for Fallbrook to Win Championship
Fallbrook High’s boys’ basketball team showed up for the championship game of the Spartan tournament with five players, the minimum to field a team.
And the host school, Chula Vista, showed up with a full complement, only to get insulted by the five other guys, 73-66.
Fallbrook took an eight-point lead in the first quarter and simply held on as all five players scored in double figures.
Chris Miller led with 22, Steve Pack added 15, John Dutton had 13, Chad Lemons 12 and Brandon Phillips 11.
Fallbrook improved to 10-2, and Chula Vista fell to 7-6.
In other Spartan Classic Games:
San Dieguito 65, Helix 51--David Demian scored 19 to lead San Dieguito to victory in the third-place game. Helix’s Lloyd Lake led all scorers with 20. San Dieguito improved to 7-5 and Helix fell to 6-2.
Oceanside 77, Hilltop 59--Carl Mathis scored 26 and teammate Damon Marrero added 17 to lead Oceanside (4-6) in the fifth-place game. Jorge Munoz led Hilltop (1-10) with 20 points.
Grossmont 83, Crawford 58--Alae Jamchi scored 19 and Vince Calrk added 15 as Grossmont (6-3) won the seventh-place game. Crawford fell to 0-8.
In the Pepsi-SUHi Tournament
Vancouver (Canada) Burnaby Central 56, Montgomery 46--Marvin Enriquez made a free throw in the first quarter for Montgomery, noteworthy because it was Montgomery’s only point in the first eight minutes. Enriquez finished with five points and Ray Lozano led Montgomery with 15.
In the Brea Tournament
Rancho Buena Vista 48, La Mirada 40--In the seventh-place game, Isaac Hilker’s 11 points and teammates Mike Ross’s and David Fellers’ 10 apiece lifted RBV (7-6). Senior center Evan Osmundson was named to the all-tournament team.
In the Las Vegas Holiday Classic
Poway 71, (Las Vegas) Bishop Gorman 51--Bishop Gorman entered the game 13-1, with its only loss coming at the hands of Fremont of LA, which won the tournament.
In the fifth-place game of a 32-team tournament, Poway outscored Bishop Gorman 40-20 the second half after going into halftime with a 31-31 tie.
The Titans were 31 of 43 at the free-throw line. Poway (11-3) won four of its five games in this tournament, the best they’ve done there.
Kyle Milling led Poway with 22 points and 15 rebounds. Todd Fortney added 12 and Andy Davis 14.
In the Valhalla Tournament
Valhalla 70, Mt. Miguel 58--After winning it’s Above the Rim game in the morning, Valhalla took an evening victory from Mt. Miguel. David Wiley and scored a game-high 20 points for the Norsemen (7-5). Marcos Golardo and Robbie Sandoval had 16 for Mt. Miguel (5-5).
