HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : West Bakersfield One-Ups Saugus, 65-62

A three-point basket proved decisive in West Bakersfield High’s 65-62 victory over Saugus on Friday in a consolation quarterfinal of the Hart basketball tournament.

Each team scored 20 two-point field goals and made 13 of 19 free throws. But West Bakersfield (11-0) sank four three-point baskets to Saugus’ three to advance to tonight’s semifinal at 8 against Hart.

Saugus’ Josh Hinrichs, who led all scorers with 26 points, accounted for each of the Centurions’ three-point baskets while shooting 10 of 19 from the field.

Guard Steve Tampus (eight points) had a potential game-tying three-point shot carom off the rim with less than 10 seconds to play.

Makuel Williams led West Bakersfield with 17 points and teammate Tim Joslin (14 points) made four of five free throws in the final two minutes.

Saugus (8-3) will play Cabrillo in a fifth-place semifinal today at 5.

In other Hart tournament games:

Hart 78, Cabrillo 72--Ali Peek scored 27 points to lead Hart (6-6) in a championship quarterfinal.

San Fernando 70, St. Francis 59 (OT)--San Fernando, with five sophomores on its roster, advanced to the championship semifinal by outscoring the Golden Knights, 11-0, in overtime.

Sophomore guard Javier Ramos led the way for the Tigers (6-3) with a game-high 21 points. Sophomores Jerome Elliot (17 points) and Kevin Pinckney (11) also scored in double figures.

David Craig and Brett Christofferson each scored 16 points for St. Francis.

Culver City 54, Canyon 37--Culver City led by only four points with seven minutes to play, but closed with an 18-5 run in a championship quarterfinal.

Joe Ferguson scored 14 points and had 15 rebounds to lead Canyon (6-5).

Glendale 76, Fresno Roosevelt 45--Sophomore Edgar Perkins scored a season-high 15 points and had 15 rebounds for Glendale (7-5) in a consolation quarterfinal. Perkins’ rebound total was the most of any Glendale player this season.

Glendale guard Hai Tran scored a game-high 23 points and had nine assists.

Antelope Valley 63, Palmdale 61--Palmdale’s Erick Stone led all scorers with 23 points, but Antelope Valley prevailed against its Golden League rival in a consolation quarterfinal.

Palmdale is 4-8.

Beverly Hills 54, Quartz Hill 41--Dan Prince scored 28 points for Quartz Hill (5-5) in a consolation quarterfinal.

In other boys’ games:

Reseda 72, Sherman Oaks CES 61--Senior Marquis Burns scored a career-high 43 points for Reseda in the opening round of the Birmingham tournament.

Burns, who will attend UCLA next season, was 12 of 24 from the field, including four of seven three-point shots.

Simi Valley 67, Service (Alaska) 62--Simi Valley (8-1) heated up in the fourth quarter of the first-round game in the Capital City Classic in Juneau, Alaska, scoring 25 points to hold off Service (8-5).

Danny Alexander scored 19 points for the victorious Pioneers. Gordon Stolla added 18 points and Ryan Briggs had 14 points and nine assists.

Santa Clara 55, Marina 49 (OT)--Stevie Amar scored six of his 21 points in overtime as the Saints beat Marina in overtime to secure a place in today’s championship game of the Orange tournament.

Amar also grabbed 17 rebounds for Santa Clara (10-2), which won its sixth in a row.

Taft 88, Roosevelt 51--Taft (9-1) made 12 three-point baskets in the Eagle Rock tournament quarterfinal to set a tournament record.

Casey Sheahan scored 24 points--including four three-point baskets--for Taft and Larry Schneider added 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Alemany 60, West Valley (Alaska) 50--Richard Dice continued his impressive play in the Atascadero tournament with 24 points and 14 rebounds as the Indians (6-5) advanced to the consolation championship.

Point guard Chris Bello added nine points and eight assists for Alemany, which will meet Santa Maria today at 4:30 p.m.

Mike Smith added nine points for the Indians, who never trailed.

Brentwood 52, L.A. Baptist 50 (OT)--Kevin Rille scored 30 points to lead Brentwood in the semifinals of the Carpinteria tournament.

Zaki Rabadi paced L. A. Baptist (5-3) with 12 points, while teammate Matt Kilanowski added 11 points.

Westlake 95, Kauai (Hawaii) 42--Joey Leavitt scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Warriors in the semifinals of the Santa Paula Tournament.

Teammate Jasen Nielsen came off the bench to add 14 points for Westlake, which will meet Santa Paula tonight in the championship.

Montclair Prep 85, Cloverdale 56--Kris Johnson made 13 of 15 shots and scored 30 points to lead the Mounties in the quarterfinals of the Ribet tournament. Johnson also had 16 rebounds for Montclair Prep (10-1), which won its eighth in a row.

Forward Chris Sanger added 17 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and six steals. Kimo Atkins contributed 17 points.

The Mounties will meet Bel-Air Prep today in the semifinals.

Highland 57, Pacific JV 41--Pharoah Davis scored 19 points and Jason Stockdale added 14 to lead Highland (3-9) in a consolation quarterfinal game of the West Valley Shootout in Hemet.

Taking advantage of an effective full-court press, Highland (3-9) opened a 23-2 lead after one quarter.

Pittsburgh North Catholic 69, Canoga Park 56--Chace Johnson scored 21 points for Canoga Park (1-11) in the Las Vegas tournament consolation quarterfinal.

St. Genevieve 60, Rio Hondo Prep 59--Jeremy Iaccino scored 20 points, including the decisive free throws with 40 seconds remaining to lift the Valiants (3-4) in a quarterfinal game of the Ribet Academy tournament.

Ryan McGinnis finished with 18 points and 14 rebounds, and teammate Edwin Morales added 16 points for St. Genevieve.

Rio Mesa 65, Calvary Chapel 40--David Halvorsen scored 21 points and teammate Jason MacLean added 13 points and eight assists as Rio Mesa (4-4) advanced to the championship game of the Walter Wont tournament in Honolulu.

Birmingham 48, Franklin 41--Carlos Avelar scored 19 points and Booker Montgomery added 11 as the Braves (5-4) never trailed in a first-round game of the Birmingham tournament.

GIRLS

Burbank 55, Alta Loma 27--Burbank held Alta Loma (1-4) to less than 10 points in every period of the Simi Valley tournament consolation semifinal.

Danielle Pershing scored 23 points for Burbank (4-5).

Burroughs 52, Crescenta Valley 29--Jamie Vahoviak scored a game-high 16 points and had seven assists to lead the Indians (3-6) in a consolation semifinal of the Hoover tournament.

Alemany 45, Pampa (Tex.) 43--Guard Kelly McKay sank two of four free throws to break a 43-43 tie in the final minute of play to give the Indians a victory in the consolation quarterfinals of the Duncanville tournament.

Center Sarah Guziel scored 17 points and McKay added 14 to lead for the Indians.

Glendale 55, Royal 42--Guard Jenny Dalton scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Nitros (8-4) to an easy victory in the first round of the Thousand Oaks tournament.
