The Irish Republican Army blew up the Dublin-Belfast railway line Friday, just three minutes after the end of its Christmas cease-fire.

The IRA, battling to oust Britain from Northern Ireland, telephoned a warning to say a bomb had been placed on the line, police said.

The subsequent explosion near the border station of Newry marked the end of a three-day Christmas truce, the police added.

Train service on the line, a favorite target for the IRA, was disrupted, and British security forces launched a major search operation for any more bombs.
