1 Marine Shot to Death, 1 Hurt After Party at Vista Apartment
A 21-year-old Marine was shot to death and his roommate was badly beaten early Christmas morning at their apartment in Vista, according to the Sheriff’s Department.
Homicide Lt. John Tenwolde said deputies were called to 180 Nettleton Road, where they found Durwin Hammond, 22, also a Marine, suffering from a blow to the head.
Hammond told deputies he and his roommate, Lindell Mitchell Jr., were having a party at their apartment at 210 Cedar Road when the guests left after a disagreement.
About 30 minutes later, shortly after midnight, several men who hadn’t attended the party reportedly forced their way into the apartment and began beating Hammond. He told deputies he heard gunshots before he ran from the apartment to the address on Nettleton Road where he was found.
