Torrey Pines Sweeps Titles
DEL MAR — Torrey Pines’ boys’ and girls’ soccer teams won their respective championships of the Third Dave Goebel Tournament at Torrey Pines.
It was the first time the tournament featured a girls’ division, and Torrey Pines won it in a landslide, beating Carlsbad, 8-0. In the boys’ final, the Falcons turned a bleak first-half performance into a 2-1 victory over San Dieguito.
Coach Brian McManus said San Dieguito dominated the midfield and controlled 70% of the play in the first half, where Marguarito Rodriguez scored on a cross from Nate Hetherington for the 1-0 lead.
“I told the players they had 10 minutes if they wanted to play and they came out and did really well. They put pressure on right away.â€
Both Torrey Pines’ goals came within that 10-minute window with Andy Strasner and Jose Carruitero scoring.
Torrey Pines (10-1-1) received $500, to be used for uniforms, for the victory. San Dieguito (10-1) received $250.
Sophomore forward Stacey Schweighart and freshman striker Summer Harrison were forces for the Falcons in the girls’ game. Schweighart scored two goals--one unassisted--and had two assists and Harrison kicked in two goals as Torrey Pines improved to 8-0.
Also scoring for the Falcons were sophomore Kelsey Mullen, who added an assist and Ashley Hanson, who scored on a corner kick.
