Robber Suspect Surrenders
A 26-year-old bank robbery suspect surrendered Friday night in Vista after fleeing on foot from federal and local authorities and barricading himself in a two-story building.
The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted a joint stakeout Friday afternoon to confirm that Mathew Calvert Carey, a suspect in the Dec. 13 robbery of a San Marcos bank, was in the vicinity of the 2400 block of Sunflower Terrace.
When Carey appeared, carrying a bag of groceries, he apparently recognized the agents and fled. At one point, said Sheriff’s Sgt. Glenn Revell, Carey stopped running, pointed a gun at an FBI agent and said, “Shoot me.†The agent ducked and Carey kept running, taking cover in a building under construction on Thibodo Road.
Carey surrendered at 7:39 p.m. Friday after about 25 minutes of talking to Sheriff’s Department hostage negotiators. A suspect in the robbery of the North County Bank at 100 West San Marcos Blvd. in San Marcos, Carey was being held without bail and will be arraigned Monday.
A .177-caliber, spring-activated air pistol was recovered at the scene.
