San Gabriel : Vote on High School OKd
The State Board of Education said last week it will allow the San Gabriel School District to hold an election to determine whether it should build its own high school.
San Gabriel students now attend high school in Alhambra. San Gabriel school officials say a high school would give them greater control over funding and instructional decisions and would make the school more responsive to local parents.

School election--The state Board of Education ruled Dec. 13 that only voters in the San Gabriel School District will be eligible to cast ballots in an election April 14 to determine whether San Gabriel should unify and build its own high school. Alhambra Unified, which would lose students if the unification is approved, is contesting the decision. A digest item last Sunday gave incorrect information.
Although there may be some state money available, district officials said they may ask for local measures, such as school bonds or a parcel tax, to fund construction.
The unification is opposed by officials of the Alhambra Unified School District, who say there is no need for a new school. The election, which has not been scheduled, would include voters in both districts.
