FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Police arrested a Santa Ana man Wednesday on suspicion of shooting a Seal Beach man in the head as he sat in a car with friends earlier this year.
Fountain Valley police stopped Tuan Hoang Phan, 18, about 3 a.m. for a traffic violation. The officers, checking Phan’s identity, learned that there was a warrant for his arrest in connection with the shooting of 20-year-old Derick Zirkle of Seal Beach.
Phan was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and taken to Orange County Jail in Santa Ana. He was being held in lieu of $200,000 bail, Detective Darril Hardin said.
Police said Zirkle was shot in the head Aug. 15 while sitting in a car talking to a group of people at Ocean Avenue and 1st Street. Zirkle, a passenger, was shot by someone in the group. He survived the attack.
Police on Wednesday said they had not established a motive in the shooting.
