THE SAVIOR OF SKID ROW

Writer Joy Horowitz said of Alice Callaghan: “Though it is true that Callaghan lives a Spartan existence--she earns a paltry $26,400 a year. . . . “
In San Francisco, a city rated as more expensive than Los Angeles, the starting salary for teachers is $26,000. In Los Angeles, it is $28,500. Can I assume therefore that pressure will be brought on the powers-that-be in the state to raise the “paltry” salaries of some of our most important citizens, so that they are not relegated to a “Spartan existence”?
