OUTLOOK
Capistrano Valley’s major focus this season will be on regaining the South Coast League title. Last season, the Cougars finished second, a game behind Irvine, despite a 22-6 record. Capistrano Valley advanced to the second round of the 1-A playoffs last season, losing to eventual runner-up Marina, 59-57. A league championship this season would be Thornton’s eighth in his 10 seasons at the school. Thornton has three starters back from last season’s team--no league team has more. Better still, all three were all-league selections. Airey was the top scorer, averaging 15.4 points. He was the team’s second-leading scorer behind Brett McCorkle, who had a 16.4 average. McCorkle, an All-Southern Section second-team selection, now goes by Lundeen and is playing at Golden West College. Sedgwick averaged 5.7 points playing point guard. Ransom averaged 8.2 points. Rhoades and Rosales each averaged 4.4 points, and Garrett 1.3 points last season. Kost and Moore were standouts on the junior varsity last season. Thornton likes the Cougars’ experience, outside shooting, team speed and good size along the front line. He hopes it’s enough to knock off Irvine.
