Tim Miller, AIDS and the Definition of Art

Regarding “Art = Activism,” by Jan Breslauer (Dec. 1):
Your recent cover articles have featured the likes of Cher, Dustin Hoffman, Jodie Foster and who? Tim Miller? What blockbuster film has he done? What multimillion-dollar contract has he signed? Does he do power lunches at Spago?
Thank goodness, none of the above. Miller has other priorities. Finally, a profile about an artist who cares . An artist who will not sit passively while bigotry, racism and censorship escalate in this country.
Art should mirror society, and quite frankly, this one needs a facial. Art is not about box-office success and high Nielsen ratings. Wake up, America. We’re in an economic recession, Klan members run for office, and AIDS affects all of us.
Miller and other committed artists are confronting these issues. I’m glad that Calendar didn’t cater to powerful Hollywood yet another week and overlook an important artist.
