CALIFORNIA IN BRIEF : SACRAMENTO : 3 New Term-Limit Initiatives Pushed

Former Los Angeles County Supervisor Pete Schabarum, the main author of the 1990 term-limit initiative, is moving through the qualification process three new initiatives that would limit terms of county supervisors, U.S. senators and members of Congress. To qualify the initiatives for the November, 1992, ballot, he needs signatures of at least 615,958 registered voters for each measure by May 5. One measure would limit supervisors to two successive terms in counties with a population of 100,000 or more. Another would prohibit senators who have served nine or more years from running for another consecutive term, but would allow them to run again after being out of office for five years. Members of the House who serve seven or more consecutive years would be blocked from running again for at least three years, limiting members to no more than four consecutive terms.
