Famed Lipizzaners Moved From Croatia

DJAKOVO, Yugoslavia — The prized white Lipizzaner horses featured at Vienna’s world-famous Spanish Riding School are being evacuated from their ancestral homes in Yugoslavia to avoid the fate of others killed in the civil war.
“We have sent around 40 horses to Slovenia, Hungary and Zagreb. The rest will be following soon,” said Pero Djambic of Croatia’s national stud farm in Djakovo, on the fringe of the republic’s eastern battle zone.
An international operation is under way to move the remaining 160 horses, including dozens of prized stallions, to safety in neighboring Hungary and Austria.
