OUTLOOK Ray, a former forward at Jacksonville University who last coached two years ago at Westminster High in Miami, inherits a team that finished last in the Express League in 1990-91 and that includes only two returning players. So the new coach is directing his initial efforts to laying a foundation. “We are still working on fundamentals,” Ray said. “We don’t have a JV program here, so a lot of these kids really have not played organized ball before. But I’m very happy with them.” He said one of his main concerns is remaining competitive with a squad that lacks size. “We are a short team, but hopefully our backcourt speed will make up for that.” Kimble, only a freshman, is one of the guys Ray is counting on to lead the team. “We are going to play control offense and Kimble probably will be the point guard,” Ray said. “He’s a high-percentage shooter and a good ballhandler. He’s got the basics covered. He’s a few steps ahead of the others on the team.” Though lacking in overall size, the Cougars do have two big men in Martinez--the only returning starter--and Gammel, both of whom Ray said weigh about 240 pounds. “They are pretty physical players,” Ray said. “Martinez is very promising as a power forward. He’s very aggressive.”
