HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Saugus Wins Championship of Own Tournament, 58-49
- Share via
For the first time in the three-year existence of the Saugus tournament, host Saugus High won the championship, defeating defending champion La Canada, 58-49, Saturday night.
With La Canada’s 6-foot-11 junior center, Richard Mandeville, out of the lineup because of a knee injury, Saugus merely had to shut down La Canada’s perimeter game.
Saugus (3-0) was effective, limiting La Canada guard Ryan Asplud to just three three-point baskets and 16 points.
Josh Hinrichs, a senior guard, led Saugus with 23 points, including eight of 12 from the free-throw line.
Saugus made only 19 of 32 free throws, squandering an opportunity to widen the margin of victory. But the Centurions led from start to finish, taking a dominating 38-27 lead early in the third quarter.
