SOUTHERN SECTION FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS : Los Alamitos Beats Hawthorne in Second Overtime

Dylan Ridgel scored on a three-yard run in the second overtime as Los Alamitos defeated Hawthorne, 20-14, in a Division III playoff game in front of about 2,000 Friday at Gahr High School.

Los Alamitos (10-2) advances to the semifinals against Hart, which defeated Chaminade, 26-21, Friday. Hawthorne ends at 9-3.

The teams were tied, 14-14, at the end of regulation and moved into overtime, in which each team starts at the other’s 10-yard line with four plays to score.

Each team missed a field-goal try on fourth down in the first overtime.

Hawthorne had the ball first in the second overtime, but tailback Morell Ollis fumbled and Los Alamitos defensive back George Sagen recovered.

Los Alamitos then got the ball at the Hawthorne 10. Marchant Wright gained seven yards in two plays, and Ridgel went into the end zone on third down for the victory.

Los Alamitos scored a pair of first-half touchdowns to take a 14-6 lead. The first came on Wright’s 17-yard run in the first quarter. Hawthorne had fumbled on the play before and it was recovered by defensive lineman Robert Torres.

The Griffins’ then scored in the second quarter when quarterback Tim Carey completed a 23-yard touchdown pass to Sagen with 23 seconds left in the first half.
