Northern Conference : NORTHEASTERN LEAGUE
Verdugo Hills COACH: Scott Kemple, 1st season LAST SEASON: 2-13; 4th in league, 2-8 PLAYERS TO WATCH: Kemple shared coaching duties with Hector Ornelas for the past two seasons at Verdugo Hills, but he is on his own now. Center Chan Cornish (6-foot-3) is just a sophomore but he is also the Dons’ lone returning starter. Senior guard James Kim (5-9), a returning letterman, has been promoted to a starting position. Kemple might have found someone to build a team around in junior guard Eddie Powell (5-10). Powell, a transfer from Oakland High, scored 31 points Tuesday night in his first game as a Don. “He’ll get you 20-25 (points) a night,†Kemple said. Senior Jeremy Galata (6-2) is a power forward and Garen Bagramyn (6-0) is a guard. OUTLOOK: Verdugo Hills has won only four games the past two seasons, but Kemple is eager to break from that losing tradition.
