American Air Leaves Australia, New Zealand: American Airlines announced that it is pulling out of Australia and New Zealand, effective Feb. 29. American said it was losing money on those routes because the airline flew passengers through Honolulu, and many preferred the nonstop service from the West Coast offered by United and Northwest Airlines. American insists that it is not a retrenchment.
