Loyola 34, Saugus 24--The sluggish Cubs, the defending Division I champion, needed some trickery to post a come-from-behind victory at St. John Bosco.
The turning point came with 17 seconds left in the first half. Saugus (6-5), leading 14-7, kicked off and Loyola’s returner caught the ball and formed an impromptu huddle with teammates. Chris Econn emerged with the ball and ran 90 yards for the tying score.
The Cubs (9-2) took the lead on another gimmick play--a halfback-option pass--in the third quarter and hung on through a wild last period.
Saugus quarterback Bobby Cowan kept his team in the game by completing 16 of 36 passes for 248 yards and three touchdowns. Mike Cruz had eight receptions for 138 yards and a score. Running back Chris Johnson rushed 16 times for 106 yards.
