Man Sentenced in Slaying Over Shared Fence

A Lakeside man who shot his neighbor to death last year following an argument over a fence was sentenced Friday to 26 years to life in state prison.
William Lawrence Gough, 55, was also ordered to pay $5,078 to the hospital where Phillip Manlove, 31, was taken before he died Sept. 8, 1990, after being shot in the arm and chest.
Gough was convicted last month of second-degree murder by a Superior Court jury after a two-week trial.
Judge Richard Murphy imposed a sentence of 19 years to life for the murder and added five years because Gough has a 1967 robbery conviction. Two more years were added for Gough’s convictions for auto theft in 1986 and forgery in 1983.
The common fence between the men’s residences in the 12600 block of Laurel Street in Lakeside had been knocked down several times, apparently by Manlove in his truck.
