IRVINE — John Armijo, the fighting lifeguard from Huntington Beach, headlines the final boxing card of the year at the Irvine Marriott.
It it also the final night for promoter Don Fraser, who is retiring. Fraser, a long-time promoter in the Los Angeles area, brought fighting to Irvine seven years ago. He will be honored in a ceremony in the ring after the first bout.
The fight cards will continue next season with Roy Englebrecht as promoter.
Armijo, perhaps the most popular local fighter at the Marriott, has a record of 11-2-1, but he hasn’t fought since losing a 12-round decision to Rollin Williams in June.
Armijo, a welterweight, will face Ali Sanchez (19-4) of Coachella.
Joey Martin, a welterweight from La Habra, will fight Mohammed Benchcht of East Los Angeles in a six-round semi-main event.
The first of six scheduled bouts is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
No one under 16 is admitted and tickets--priced at $32, $27, and $22--go on sale today in the hotel’s grand ballroom at 10 a.m.
