COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Hancock Holds Off Oxnard in Basketball

Despite 17 points by Shawn Talley and 15 by Art Wallace, Oxnard College’s basketball team dropped an 80-79 decision to Hancock on Friday in a nonconference opening game at Santa Clara High.

Hancock made six free throws in the final minute.

After J.R. Greer’s jump shot brought Oxnard within 80-79 with eight seconds remaining, Hancock ran down the clock until Talley stole the ball at the buzzer. Atherly Cameron added 10 points for Oxnard.

In other men’s basketball openers:

Moorpark 100, San Diego Mesa 74--Damian Wilson scored 32 points to help Moorpark open its season with a win in the first round of the Cerro Coso tournament in San Diego.

Moorpark’s Jimmy Galbert and Carlos Vasquez added 17 and 12 points.

Canyons 98, Monterey Peninsula 80--Reggie Bell scored 25 points and David Langley added 20 points and five assists to help Canyons win at home. Marquis Wilborn added 17.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Ventura d. Moorpark, 15-5, 15-3, 15-1--Venessa Hackett totaled nine kills and teammate Sandy Ford added seven as the Pirates (18-0, 17-0) kept their perfect season intact with a Western State Conference win at Ventura.

Heather Welser added four kills in five attempts for Ventura, which will conclude conference play Tuesday before beginning playoff action the following week. Moorpark fell to 4-13.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Moorpark 2, Bakersfield 2--Midfielder Michele Light scored on a pass from Liz Libin at the 88-minute mark to tie the score for Moorpark, which clinched the Western State Conference title.

Moorpark, which improved to 8-1-1, 6-1-1 in conference play, trailed throughout the match.

Kristin Reihman scored on a pass from Stevie Campbell at the 26-minute mark to tie the score, 1-1.
