Meanwhile, on the Other Side of the Spectrum
On Friday, Nov. 8, your paper reported two stories, which, although unrelated, told a big story when compared. The first was the shocking retirement of Magic Johnson, arguably the greatest and most charismatic professional in the history of sports, who will now selflessly give the rest of his life to help fight AIDS. The second story, deservedly smaller, was about Eric Dickerson, the ultimate team player, being suspended by the Indianapolis Colts for refusing to practice.
In the course of a few pages, the entire spectrum of class and professionalism in sports was presented. All other athletes fall somewhere in between.
