A Scotsman who served more than 10 years of a life term in prison after his conviction for a series of brutal rapes and assaults was freed Wednesday after an examination of forensic evidence showed he was not the attacker.

An appeal court overturned the conviction of John McGranaghan, 48, after new tests on evidence taken from the scene of one assault showed McGranaghan’s blood type did not match that of the rapist.

His acquittal is the latest in a series of cases deemed to have been miscarriages of justice--the most famous of them involving Irish guerrilla bombings in the 1970s.
