A Los Angeles Police Department helicopter, similar to the one that crashed and killed three people in June, malfunctioned Wednesday and made an emergency landing at the Armed Forces Reserve Center here, police said.

Even though the helicopter landed on its side, the pilot and his passenger were not hurt.

Minutes after taking off shortly after noon, the French-made Aerospatiale 350-1 A-Star was forced to set down near the airstrip, said an LAPD spokesman, Lt. Fred Nixon. The pilot and his passenger, both unidentified, had been flying a routine proficiency test.

Nixon said the cause is under investigation.

Police pilots routinely undergo proficiency tests at the air base, he said.

On June 13, an Aerospatiale 350 B-1 crashed after reporting engine trouble and exploded in a vacant lot in southwest Los Angles, killing both officers aboard and a person on the ground.
