PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : He Is Missing the Big Game
Rookie quarterback Todd Marinovich had no second thoughts about leaving USC after his sophomore season until this week. Notre Dame week.
“I think that’s really the thing I miss the most, playing in that game,†Marinovich said after Thursday’s Raider practice. “I just wish I could have been there for this one.â€
USC plays Notre Dame Saturday at South Bend, Ind., having lost eight consecutive games to the Irish.
Marinovich would have been a junior had he remained in school. Instead of running the scout team for the Raiders this week, with a slim chance of playing in Monday night’s game against the Chiefs at Kansas City, Marinovich would have been a main attraction as he prepared for one of college football’s greatest matchups.
“I could have been playing this week, in front of a big crowd, in a big-time game,†he reflected.
Marinovich’s pro career has amounted to four passes thrown in an exhibition game against the Dallas Cowboys. Still, he said he has no reservations about leaving college early and signing as a first-round draft choice with the Raiders.
“This week is the only time I’ve thought about being back there again,†he said. “I’m definitely missing it this week. Probably the only week.â€
Injury update: The Raiders list right guard Max Montoya, who has a groin injury, as questionable for Monday night’s game. . . . The Chiefs list cornerback Albert Lewis and nose tackle Dan Saleaumua as probable despite knee injuries. Cornerbacks Kevin Ross, with an ankle injury, and Billy Bell, with a hand injury, are questionable, as is defensive end Leonard Griffin, who has a groin injury.
