Heavy Fog Blamed for 12-Car Crash on Bridge

Heavy fog was blamed for a 12-car, chain-reaction collision Saturday on the Gerald Desmond Bridge in Long Beach. Several people were injured and the span was closed for two hours.
The traffic mess was triggered about 7:45 a.m. when six vehicles in the eastbound lanes crashed at the bottom of the bridge, which carries Ocean Boulevard across one of the channels of the Long Beach Harbor, said Police Cpl. Wes Workman. At the time, fog had cut visibility on the bridge to about 100 feet.
After the initial crash, there were three other collisions up the span involving six more cars.
Only minor injuries were reported, but officers had to close the bridge for about two hours because most of the cars had to be towed away.
