THE NEW FACE OF L.A.

“The New Face of L.A.” (by David Rieff, Sept. 15) is condescending to the people of Los Angeles and an insult to our immigrant population. My immigrant friends did not come here to make this the capital of the Third World, as Mr. Rieff calls Los Angeles. That is a world they very much want to leave behind. Most of them are already, or are trying to become, American citizens. To insinuate that they are part of a different world is to imply that they are not part of this country, and that is the worst insult.
