CALIFORNIA IN BRIEF : BAKERSFIELD : NOW Rally Turns Into Shouting Match

A National Organization for Women rally against U.S. Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas turned into a noisy shouting match with counterdemonstrators. The rally by NOW’s Bakersfield chapter drew about 40 people, including feminists and gay rights activists opposed to Thomas’ nomination to the Supreme Court. Emotions boiled when six counterdemonstrators banged pots and taunted the NOW members as “baby killers.” Three people wore hand-decorated T-shirts with a “COW” logo, modeled after the NOW logo, which they said stood for Conservatives Opposing Women.
