A 33-year-old man in Houston has become the first person with a failing heart to recover with a portable, battery-powered heart assist device, a newspaper reported. Michael Templeton’s own diseased heart remains in place while the electric pump delivers oxygenated blood until a heart donor can be found, the New York Times reported. The man wears the device in a shoulder holster. The device has been approved for experimental implant in three more patients, the paper reported.
