The Gulls, who open their second International Hockey League season one week from today, cut Scott Brower, their top goalie last year. Brower was one of four players cut Friday, reducing the training camp roster to 21. The Gulls will conduct a free public scrimmage at 4 p.m. today.
SAILING
Bill Koch, one of two skippers that will race next year for the right to defend the America’s Cup, won his second consecutive Maxi World Championship at St. Tropez, Italy. Aboard Matador-2, Koch first second and third in the fifth and sixth races and clinched the championship with one race remaining Sunday.
INDOOR SOCCER
Individual game tickets for all Sockers’ 1991-92 home games go on sale Tuesday (10 a.m.) at Ticketmaster outlets and the Sports Arena box office.
Prices range from $8 to $13 with junior, senior and military discounts available.
The nine-time champions open their home schedule Oct. 26 against the St. Louis Storm and Branko Segota.
TENNIS
Bidding for his second National Intercollegiate Clay Court championship title in three years, Jose Luis Noriega of the University of San Diego won two matches at Wilmington, N.C., to advance to today’s semifinals against eighth-seeded David Decret of UC Santa Barbara.
The third-seeded Noriega opened the day with a 7-5, 6-3 second-round win over Eric Fahnestock of Oklahoma State, then took his quarterfinal match when Tony Bujan of Texas Christian retired because of leg cramps and fatigue. Noriega led 6-2, 4-1.
SOCCER
Brian Craft-Negrete scored an unassisted goal 14 minutes into the second half to give the 19th-ranked San Diego State men’s team a 1-0 victory at No. 20 St. Mary’s. It was Craft-Negrete’s sixth goal of the season and lifted SDSU to 7-0 heading into Sunday’s match at No. 1 Santa Clara.
Goalie Dan Dalzochio, a transfer from St. Mary’s, made five saves and picked up his third victory and second shutout.
Top-ranked Santa Clara broke a scoreless tie 10 seconds in the second half and went on to a 3-0 West Coast Conference victory over the University of San Diego (3-4, 0-1) in Santa Clara. Peter Cochran scored the first two goals, his third and fourth of the year, Patrick Griffin added the other for the Broncos (8-0, 2-0). USD plays next at Cal Sunday.
Mike Gerhardt and Chris Hanssen scored unassisted first-half goals to lead UC San Diego to a 2-1 nonconference victory over Grand Canyon (5-2). UCSD improved to 4-3.
Katy Dulock had a goal and an assist to lift UC San Diego to a 2-1 nonconference victory over UC Irvine. Kalyn Shea had the other goal for the Tritons (5-0-1). UC Irvine fell to 4-4-1.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Gracie Schutt had 23 kills for San Diego State, but the Aztecs fell in four games to the defending NCAA champion UCLA Bruins, 15-12, 5-15, 15-8, 15-7, in Westwood. UCLA, ranked second, got 17 kills from Elaine Youngs to improve to 8-1. The Aztecs fell to 6-8.
Pepperdine had a relatively easy time with the University of San Diego, winning, 15-8, 15-6, 15-6, in Malibu. Nikki Wallace led the Toreras (8-7, 0-1) with 12 kills. Pepperdine got 17 kills from Blair Noonan, a graduate of San Pasqual, to improve 8-4, 1-0.
UC San Diego won its two matches, 3-0, on the first day of its own tournament in La Jolla. UCSD defeated Menlo College, 15-4, 15-1, 16-14, then downed La Verne, 15-7, 17-15, 15-6. Vikki Van Duyne led the Tritons (12-2) in each with 11 and 14 kills. Heading into today’s final day, UCSD is tied with Colorado College at 2-0. Southwestern (Tex.) is 1-1, and La Verne and Menlo College both are 0-2.
Robin Rabello had 15 kills and three aces to lead Point Loma Nazarene to a 15-10, 15-13, 15-11 nonconference victory over The Masters at Golden Gym. PLNC improved to 8-7, and Masters fell to 11-15.
