NATION IN BRIEF : MASSACHUSETTS : Brother Charged in Stuart Slaying
- Share via
A grand jury in Boston indicted Matthew Stuart, brother of the late Charles Stuart Jr., on charges of conspiracy to obstruct justice and compounding a felony in the Oct. 23, 1989, shooting death of Charles Stuart’s wife, Carol. A friend, John McMahon, was indicted as an accessory to murder after the fact. Implicit in the charges is the jury’s belief that Charles Stuart killed his wife, a district attorney spokesman said. Charles Stuart, who also was shot, had told police that he and his wife were mugged. But more than two months later, Matthew Stuart told police that his brother had staged the crime. Charles Stuart plunged off a bridge on Jan. 4, 1990, in an apparent suicide.
