Big Law Firms Cutting Back: Almost half of the nation’s largest law firms cut their staffs during the last year, primarily because of the weak economy, according to a survey by the National Law Journal. In a survey of the nation’s top 250 firms, the weekly found that 44% of the biggest firms pared their staffs during the past 12 months, up from 17% the year before. The firms mostly laid off mid-level associates and reduced hiring while making relatively few cuts at the partnership level.
