BUENA PARK : Man Surrenders After Police Standoff
A man, distraught that his wife had left him, barricaded himself in his house with a shotgun Thursday night before surrendering peacefully four hours later, police said.
Patrick Vane, 27, was booked into the Brea Psychological Ward at Brea Hospital’s Neuropsychiatric Center for a 72-hour observation period, Buena Park Police Sgt. Terry Branum said.
At 11:30 p.m. Thursday, Vane walked out of his house in the 7600 block of Puerto Rico Drive, “threw down the gun and surrendered,†Branum said.
Four hours before, however, police had cordoned off the block and warned neighbors to stay inside their houses after it was reported that gunfire was coming from the house.
Neighbors and police said that at least two gunshots were heard coming from the house. No one was injured.
At 7:20 p.m., police arrived and SWAT unit members were called at 9:20 p.m. Paramedics and fire officials waited while officers, aided by two of Vane’s children and his sister-in-law, tried to speak to him.
Neighbor Melody Pendarvis said Vane and his wife apparently had been fighting and she had left that day for Bakersfield with their other two children.
