Gorbachev Says First Lady Is Still Recovering
MOSCOW — President Mikhail S. Gorbachev said Sunday his wife, Raisa, is recovering after a “very bad boutâ€--apparently of nerves--during last month’s attempted coup d’etat .
An emotional Gorbachev struggled for words and repeated himself as he described her condition in an interview on Soviet television and the Cable News Network.
“Everything is normal, everything is normal. But it will take time, it will take time,†he said.
Raisa Gorbachev, 59, and her family were under house arrest in the Crimea during the Aug. 18-21 coup. Gorbachev has indicated that she grew sick with worry and she may have suffered some form of nervous breakdown.
During the live CNN interview, the Russian word for “bout†was translated as heart attack. Raisa Gorbachev, however, does not appear to have suffered a heart attack or stroke during the coup.
