Newspaper Ordered to Pay Back Wages: The Los Angeles Daily News has been ordered to pay annual raises that it withheld from employees during a union organizing drive. The decision by the National Labor Relations Board upheld an earlier ruling by an administrative law judge who found the Woodland Hills-based newspaper improperly denied the raises to dissuade workers from joining the Los Angeles Newspaper Guild. The guild became the workers’ bargaining agent in May, 1989. The ruling covers a yet-undetermined amount of wages withheld from about 200 employees from June, 1989, to February, 1991. The Daily News--a division of Cooke Media Group, owned by billionaire Jack Kent Cooke--said it is reviewing whether to appeal the board ruling.
