NATION IN BRIEF : GEORGIA : Child Death Rate in Cars Unchanged

The use of car safety seats for children has soared in the last eight years, but child fatalities have not decreased, probably because children are spending more and more time in cars, federal researchers said. About 500 to 700 children under age 5 have died in U.S. traffic accidents each year since 1983. In the same period, as mandatory safety-seat laws spread, use of the seats rose from 38% to 84% for children ages 1 to 4 and from 60% to 83% for children younger than age 1, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control’s Division of Injury Control reported in Atlanta.
