NATIVE SONS: Besides former Irvine mayor Larry Agran (A3), can you name others from Orange County who have run for president? Did you take the easy one first, 1984 Libertarian candidate David Bergland of Costa Mesa? There was also John Schmitz. He’s the former Republican congressman from Corona del Mar who ran on the American Independent ticket in 1972 against President Richard M. Nixon, who has Orange County ties of his own. . . . Bergland still practices law. Schmitz now owns a combination book shop-and-bar in Washington, D.C.
