Shooter Fails Drug Test, Loses Medal
Pedro Garcia Miro, a Peruvian shooter, was stripped of his silver medal Thursday after drug-testing results revealed that he used a banned substance, Pan American Games officials said.
Darius Young of the United States, who finished behind Garcia to win the bronze medal in the center fire pistol event, was awarded the silver.
Garcia tested positive on Aug. 9 for Propanolol, a beta blocker used by archers and shooters to slow down their heartbeat and help steady their hands.
Garcia is the third athlete to fail a drug test in the Games. Jose Gomez, a gold medalist in rowing from Mexico, and Georgette Reed, a Canadian shotputter, were identified earlier in the week. Gomez was stripped of his medal. Reed did not win a medal.
Mario Vasquez Rana, president of the Pan American Sports Organization, had said Tuesday that no athletes were using performance-enhancing drugs.
