One man was killed and another injured in an accident on Interstate 8 about a mile east of Carrizo Gorge Road, authorities said.
Frank M. Chevez, 60, of Brawley was killed at 9:45 p.m. Sunday when the truck he was riding in crashed into the back of a van that was pulling a trailer, said California Highway Patrol Officer Phil Konstantin. The driver of the pickup, Mario Torres, 33, of Brawley, is in serious condition at Sharp Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said.
The pickup was reportedly traveling about 75 m.p.h. when it rear-ended the van, which was going about 40 m.p.h., Konstantin said. The driver of the van, David Voelker, 24, of Santee, was not injured.
