World IN BRIEF : ISRAEL : Amnesty Charges on Prisoners Dismissed

Israel said allegations by Amnesty International that it tortured and mistreated Palestinian prisoners were fabricated and witnesses had lied for personal or political motives. The human rights group said in a newly issued 80-page report that prison inmates were regularly hooded with dirty sacks and deprived of food or sleep, usually by being shackled in painful positions while held in solitary confinement. The Israeli Justice Ministry countered by saying every allegation of maltreatment was thoroughly dealt with.
