Woods Reaches Junior Amateur Final

Tiger Woods of Cypress continued his impressive play this summer by winning his quarterfinal- and semifinal-round matches Saturday at the USGA Junior Amateur Championships at the Bay Hill Club in Orlando, Fla.
Woods, who will be a sophomore at Western High School in September, dominated Kevin Mihailoff of Naples, Fla., 5 and 4, in one semifinal. Woods moves into today’s final against Brad Zwetschke of Kankakee, Ill., on the 7,027-yard course.
Zwetschke defeated Mark Slawter of Winston Salem, N.C., 2 and 1, in the other semifinal.
Woods, 15, had a more difficult time in his quarterfinal match against Tom Biershank of Inman, S.C. He had a one-hole lead going to the 18th, but he won the hole to take the match, 2-up.
Woods had won the stroke-play part of the competition when he shot a four-under 140.
He came into the tournament after winning his sixth title in the Optimist Junior World Championships at Torrey Pines’ south course in San Diego.
