COUNTYWIDE : Program to Provide Break to Care Givers
A Saturday adult day-care program for mentally or physically disabled people is taking reservations for the fall.
Designed to provide a break for Ventura County care givers, the Respite Day Care Program will include arts and crafts, special trips and social activities for seniors who can’t be left alone, said Tom Hashbarger, Ventura Easter Seal executive director.
“The respite idea is for the care giver, who can take the opportunity to get away for a day on the weekend and go see a ballgame or go shopping,†Hashbarger said. The program, sponsored by the Ventura County Easter Seal organization, is the only weekend program of its kind in the area.
“The population we are looking at is primarily seniors who need attentive care. Somebody who probably shouldn’t be left alone, such as a victim of Alzheimer’s disease, who may get forgetful and wander off,†Hashbarger said.
Up to 20 spaces are available in the program, which costs $25 per day and is located at the Easter Seal center on Henderson Road in Ventura. Scheduled to begin in mid-September, the program will be run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Further information can be obtained from the Easter Seal Society at 647-1141.
