Northbound Jamboree Lanes Blocked by Break in Water Main
NEWPORT BEACH — A broken water main closed the northbound lanes of Jamboree Road on Monday, detouring evening rush-hour drivers, and will force commuters this morning to find alternate routes.
Authorities closed the northbound lanes of a quarter-mile stretch of Jamboree between San Joaquin Hills and Ford roads at about 3:30 p.m., Police Sgt. Andy Gonis said.
City crews worked to repair a 20-inch crack in the underground line so that the three lanes could be reopened by this afternoon.
The cause of the break was not immediately known, said Ginger Varin, spokeswoman for the Public Works Department. Varin said someone called the department Sunday afternoon to report water on Jamboree Road. “We’ve closed off the northbound lanes because we’ve taken the worst-case scenario that the underground line in that area is completely damaged,†Varin said.
This morning, northbound commuters should use alternate routes, including MacArthur Boulevard, to get from Coast Highway to the San Diego Freeway, police said. Southbound lanes on Jamboree remain open.
The Water Department has closed the broken line.
