Navratilova, Sabatini Out of Olympics; Seles in Limbo
International Tennis Federation officials said Martina Navratilova and Gabriela Sabatini will be ineligible for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics for skipping the Federation Cup, which begins today.
Top-ranked Monica Seles of Yugoslavia could also be barred because of her late withdrawal from that 32-nation competition. Seles says she is “not in the form I want to be in†because of recent injuries.
“There is the San Diego tournament and the rankings are coming up and that’s the most important thing to me,†Seles said. “I don’t think it would be good for me to play in the Fed Cup, and maybe get hurt again.â€
Debbie Jevans, director of women’s tennis for the ITF, said: “If it is accepted that her withdrawal for this event was due to injury, then she would be eligible to play in the Olympics.â€
