Navratilova, Sabatini Out of Olympics; Seles in Limbo

International Tennis Federation officials said Martina Navratilova and Gabriela Sabatini will be ineligible for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics for skipping the Federation Cup, which begins today.

Top-ranked Monica Seles of Yugoslavia could also be barred because of her late withdrawal from that 32-nation competition. Seles says she is “not in the form I want to be in� because of recent injuries.

“There is the San Diego tournament and the rankings are coming up and that’s the most important thing to me,� Seles said. “I don’t think it would be good for me to play in the Fed Cup, and maybe get hurt again.�

Debbie Jevans, director of women’s tennis for the ITF, said: “If it is accepted that her withdrawal for this event was due to injury, then she would be eligible to play in the Olympics.�
