Venice Beach Is Site for Women’s Volleyball Tour

The top players on the women’s pro beach volleyball tour will compete in the $50,000 U.S. Open this weekend at Venice Beach. The top-ranked team of Karolyn Kirby and Angela Rock has won 10 tournaments this season, including last week’s event at Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Janice Harrer and Elaine Roque are seeded second and Lori Kotas and Gail Castro are seeded third.
Kotas-Castro have won two tournaments this year, including the $40,000 Reno Shootout on June 2. Harrer-Roque have reached the final of three events.
The first Lady Panther Offensive Skills and Shooting Basketball Camp, for girls age 13 through 17, will be held Aug. 2-4 and Aug. 9-11 at Peninsula High, formerly Rolling Hills High.
Both sessions of the camp will be conducted by Peninsula girls’ basketball Coach Wendell Yoshida, who coached Palos Verdes High for 11 seasons and guided the team to the State Division III title last season.
The featured clinician is Ace Hoffstein, a professional shooting instructor who has a 510-160 record as a coach on the high school, community college and professional levels.
Times of the camps are as follows: Friday: 3-8 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday: 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Fees are $95 for one session or $175 for both. Enrollment is limited to 50 players per session. Information: Yoshida at (213) 318-5491.
