Unorthodox: The Orthodox Catholic Church of Louisiana has excommunicated someone who was not a member. Methodist Gov. Buddy Roemer earned the wrath of the church because he vetoed three stringent anti-abortion bills. The church can put out someone who has never been in, said Vicar Lee McColloster in New Orleans: “Buddy Roemer by his actions in the abortion issue has continually gone against Christ’s teaching.†Roemer’s retort: “I don’t like being excommunicated, no matter whose organization it is.†The Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches split in the 11th Century. The Orthodox Catholic Church does not recognize the Pope.
* Retrial: The love-triangle murder indictment of former schoolteacher Carolyn Warmus was upheld by a White Plains, N.Y., judge Tuesday, clearing the way for her retrial. Warmus, 27, was tried in the January, 1989, killing of Betty Jeanne Solomon, the wife of Warmus’ lover, fellow teacher Paul Solomon. A four-month trial and 12 days of jury deliberations ended in April with a hung jury.
* Denial: A federal judge has denied Jeffrey MacDonald’s petition for a new murder trial, a court clerk said Tuesday in Raleigh, N.C. MacDonald, a former Green Beret doctor, is serving three consecutive life prison terms for the slayings of his pregnant wife and their two young daughters at their Fort Bragg, N.C., apartment in 1970. He had blamed the deaths on hippie intruders who chanted “Acid is groovy, kill the pigs.†The case was made into a best-selling book and TV miniseries, “Fatal Vision.â€
* Booked: A trip to Moscow has publisher Rupert Murdoch smiling: He clinched a deal with Soviet First Lady Raisa Gorbachev to publish her autobiography. “I Hope: Reminiscences and Reflections†recounts everything from Gorbachev’s childhood in Siberia to her life in the Kremlin.
