They Didn’t Exist, So They Didn’t Play

Jim Murray’s article on polo (June 25) touched a chord or two of nostalgia. I served for 25 years in the Indian Army.
While Murray is correct in that modern polo was originated by British regiments in India, the Bengal Lancers had naught to do with it, because, contrary to local legend, there never was a Bengal Lancers Regiment, except in Hollywood lore.
There were other famous cavalry regiments, which exist to this day, and though they now fight their wars in tanks, they still mount their ponies for a chukker or two. But the Bengal Lancers existed only on celluloid.
