Faulty Gasoline Sold at 106 Mobil Stations

Gasoline containing too much rust inhibitor was sold at 106 Mobil service stations in the Los Angeles area, causing problems for some motorists, Mobil Oil Corp. officials said Friday.
Mobil has promised to reimburse motorists for repairs related to the gasoline, which was sold at stations in the South Bay area, Long Beach, Santa Monica and other parts of Los Angeles and Orange counties.
The gasoline has been traced to a loading terminal at Mobil’s Torrance refinery, one of four Mobil terminals serving Los Angeles. Rust inhibitor was mistakenly added instead of detergent, said James A. Carbonetti, Mobil West Coast public affairs manager.
Mobil has received about 75 reports of car problems since June 21, including rough running, reduced power, or starting or stalling difficulties. The additive will not cause permanent damage, Carbonetti said. Customers who have experienced problems can call Mobil at 1-800-662-4525.
