A judge dismissed murder charges against five New York City police officers accused of killing an unarmed man they found sleeping in a stolen car. One officer remains charged with manslaughter and negligence. Police had said the victim, Federico Pereira, 21, became violent on Feb. 5. Officers denied beating him or using a chokehold, but a medical examiner said Pereira choked to death. Three dozen people led by black activists Alton H. Maddox Jr. and the Rev. Al Sharpton shouted “Murderers” at the end of the hearing.
